A Snapshot of Annual High-Risk College Drinking Consequences

•Death: 1,825 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, including motor vehicle crashes (Hingson et al., 2009).


•Injury: 599,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol (Hingson et al., 2009).


•Assault: 696,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are assaulted by another student who has been drinking (Hingson et al., 2009).


•Sexual Abuse: 97,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are victims of alcohol-related sexual assault or date rape (Hingson et al., 2009).


•Unsafe Sex: 400,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 had unprotected sex and more than 100,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 report having been too intoxicated to know if they consented to having sex (Hingson et al., 2002).


•Academic Problems: About 25 percent of college students report academic consequences of their drinking including missing class, falling behind, doing poorly on exams or papers, and receiving lower grades overall (Engs et al., 1996; Presley et al., 1996a, 1996b; Wechsler et al., 2002).


•Health Problems/Suicide Attempts: More than 150,000 students develop an alcohol-related health problem (Hingson et al., 2002), and between 1.2 and 1.5 percent of students indicate that they tried to commit suicide within the past year due to drinking or drug use (Presley et al., 1998).


•Drunk Driving: 3,360,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 drive under the influence of alcohol (Hingson et al., 2009).


•Vandalism: About 11 percent of college student drinkers report that they have damaged property while under the influence of alcohol (Wechsler et al., 2002).


•Property Damage: More than 25 percent of administrators from schools with relatively low drinking levels and over 50 percent from schools with high drinking levels say their campuses have a "moderate" or "major" problem with alcohol-related property damage (Wechsler et al., 1995).


•Police Involvement: About 5 percent of 4-year college students are involved with the police or campus security as a result of their drinking (Wechsler et al., 2002), and 110,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are arrested for an alcohol-related violation such as public drunkenness or driving under the influence (Hingson et al., 2002).


•Alcohol Abuse and Dependence: 31 percent of college students met criteria for a diagnosis of alcohol abuse and 6 percent for a diagnosis of alcohol dependence in the past 12 months, according to questionnaire-based self-reports about their drinking (Knight et al., 2002).

College Park stabbing: Police make arrest in Thirsty Turtle fight

UPDATE 11:25 p.m.: Police have released these surveillance photos of the man they believe stabbed four men, including three University of Maryland students during a fight outside of the bar.

Tuesday night, police were more visible on and around Route 1. While signs on the bar doors indicate IDs are checked every time, according to campus police, the bar has failed a couple of sting operations using underage police aids.

Since August at least 30 students and Thirsty Turtle customers have been transported to hospitals for intoxication and alcohol poisoning.

Star lacrosse player charged w/murder: coed found in pool of blood

Yeardley Love was just three weeks away from graduating from the University of Virginia. With a major in political science and a minor in Spanish she exuded radiance even in a lecture hall full of at least 100 other students.

The wide eyed 22-year-old from Maryland was eager for an opportunity to end her college lacrosse career with a potential National Championship title.

In the early morning hours on Monday, May 3 all of Yeardley’s dreams were cut short.

Roommates came home to find Love in her bedroom face down on her pillow covered with blood. At first glance the roommates thought Love had suffered an alcohol overdose but upon a closer examination obvious injuries were noticed – a large bruise on the right side of her face appearing to be caused by blunt force trauma, her right eye swollen shut and bruises and scrapes upon her chin.

Police were called to the apartment at 2:15am. When police arrived Yeardley Love was pronounced dead.

Within hours police made contact with George Huguely, also a senior lacrosse player at the University of Virginia. Reportedly Huguely and Love dated off and on for about a year and a half. The relationship had ended according to Huguely, but it is unclear when.

Huguely, also from Maryland, attended the prestigious Landon School. He has a checkered past having pled guilty to resisting arrest, public swearing and public intoxication. He received 6 months of supervised probation for that crime.

After waiving his rights under Miranda, Huguely admitted he was “involved in an altercation with Yeardley Love and during the course of the altercation he shook Love and her head repeatedly hit the wall.” Huguely was taken into police custody and charged with murder in the first degree. He has not requested bail and is reportedly on 23 hour segregation with no visitors with the exception of his attorney.

Contained in the Charlottesville Police search warrant affidavit, Huguely says he “kicked his right foot through the door that leads to Love’s bedroom.” It is not clear what set allegedly Huguely off, but upon leaving Love’s apartment he took her computer with him. Police say the computer was later located with the help of Huguely. The suspect allegedly told an officer that he had communicated with the victim by email.

Further, according to a local report, police seized items from Huguely’s home – a t-shirt with a red stain, a letter addressed to Yeardley Love, a green spiral notebook, 2 white socks, 2 Apple laptop computers, a bathroom rug, a shower curtain, the entryway rug, and a pair of blue cargo shorts. Investigators also took DNA swabs from the bathtub, the kitchen, the kitchen’s trashcan and the entryway door. The search warrant return for the items seized are now under seal.

Police have charged Huguely with murder 1, but Huguely’s attorney, Francis Lawrence, says it was all “an accident with a tragic outcome.”
